| The RS 2012 is a 12-inch woofer with a green poly/aluminum composite, injection-molded cone and rubber surround. It was delivered for testing in a tuned enclosure of about 2 cubic feet with a single 4.25- x 8.74-inch port. Features include Hollywood's patented MAFOS bumped ventory pole piece, a beefy stamped basket, heavy-duty 8-gauge binding posts, and a set of those cone-stiffening bumps that have become so popular recently. Subjective Upper bass transients are a bit soft, but tonal accuracy is surprisingly good for a tuned system. Sub bass response is a little ragged, but all bass-reflex systems tend to protest when driven below their tuning frequency at high levels. Overall, the RS 2012 is an impressive little sub. We drove it mercilessly in our listening tests and it never really seemed to get out of shape. Even the pipe organ didn't cause an undue amount of flapping, although its output at 18 Hz was down a bit, relatively speaking. If you're looking for a well-executed tuned sub, check out the RS2012. We're sure Hollywood Sound Labs will be happy to provide the necessary enclosure plans. The RS 2100 series is available in 10-, 12-, and 15-inch (4-ohm), and 12-inch 4 + 4-ohm DVC models. Objective Impedance measurements for the RS 2012 show a maximum of 23.8 ohms at 20.7 Hz and a minimum of 4.4 ohms @ 33 Hz. Average impedance measured 9.5 ohms. Out-of-car measurements show a rising response below 100 Hz, followed by a 24 dB-per-octave roll-off below about 35 Hz. In-car measurements show a 1-watt sensitivity of 98 dB at 20 Hz, and a relatively flat response. The 300 watt trace (top) shows about 4 dB of power compression and a maximum SPL of 125 dB at 47 Hz. |
