The TV-L8100 is a color TV/AM/FM receiver with CD changer control. Features include a retractable 5-inch LCD screen, diversity antenna input, two auxiliary A/V inputs, four preamp outputs, video output, and internal amps with a maximum power rating of 25 watts x 4. The TV-L8100 system consists of two major components, the head unit, which houses the LCD screen and all of the unit’s controls, and a hide-away tuner that contains the power supply, internal power amps, and all of the system’s interface connections.

Performance
The standard battery of test signals that we use to evaluate head units is contained on a CD. Since we didn’t receive a CD changer with the TV-L8100, we had to take a slightly different approach when testing this unit. Luckily, the unit’s auxiliary inputs offer a prime place to pipe in a test signal, so we used aux 1 input for all of our measurements.

The internal amps produced about 12 watts x 4 with all channels driven into 4 ohms. Signal-to-noise measured about 5 dB lower than the preamp outs, but frequency response fits within a much more reasonable window of about 3 dB. Tone controls provide approximately 10 dB of boost or cut at center frequencies of 100 Hz and 8.5 kHz, and boost/cut resolution measures about 2 dB per click.

User Evaluation
We tested the TV-L8100’s LCD screen the old-fashioned way — by watching it. This 5-inch LCD looks really good. After a little tweaking, on-screen images were at least as sharp and colorful as my best home television.

The TV-L8100’s TV tuner has four antenna inputs that are to be used with a diversity antenna. This prevents losing or degrading the signal as your car changes direction; the tuner simply utilizes the antenna with the strongest signal.

The TV-L8100’s user interface is surprisingly straightforward considering the unit’s complexity, and I don’t think that you could ask for much more in the way of I/O options. However, the preamp outs have low operating. Keeping the cable runs as short as possible by installing the hide-away tuner close to the system amplifiers is recommended.
