In order to get across the police department's D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program's message, the first step is getting the kid's attention. What better way than blasting some heavy bass and some tunes through a pair of 12-inch Rockford Fosgate HE2 subs powered by a 4-channel Punch 600a4 amplifier out the back of a 1998 Ford Taurus LX painted a patriotic red, white and blue? The Avondale Police Department's D.A.R.E. program, Rockford Fosgate and Audio Express (West Camelback Road, Phoenix) have recently worked together to provide just that."The output the Rockford system provides blew away my expectations," says Avondale D.A.R.E Officer Raymond Harris, a five-year veteran of the force, the past four years spent as the department's D.A.R.E. officer. "We preach a very important message, and we need to speak the language of the kids on the street in an effort to show that we are on the same side. What better way to grab their attention than the Fosgate system? As I walked into Audio Express' garage, I heard this powerful system and thought it had to be this monster truck parked inside. As I got closer, I was shocked to find out that it was coming out of my cruiser's trunk! We are very appreciative of Rockford's donation, as well as the time and effort Tony Gutierrez of Audio Express' provided for the installation. This donation will help our cause tremendously."
According to D.A.R.E.'s official website (www.dare.com), this year, 36 million school children around the world - 26 million in the United States - will benefit from D.A.R.E. This highly acclaimed program gives children the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful it is now implemented in over 75 percent of our nation's school districts and in 52 countries around the world.
"D.A.R.E. is a very important and effective community program," explains Charlie Leib, public relations manager for Rockford Corporation. "If Rockford is able to help the police department deter kids from drugs and violence, we are going to provide whatever support we can. We also thank Tony, James and the rest of the staff at Audio Express for their gracious time and effort in support of the D.A.R.E. program."
In service since November 1998, the Avondale Police Department's D.A.R.E. cruiser is a 1998 Ford Taurus LX that's sole purpose is to preach D.A.R.E.'s message by appearing at car shows, sound-off competitions, schools and other events that allow it to show off its audio system and cosmetics in order to attract youths.
James Bustamante, manager of the Audio Express that donated the Rockford installation's time and labor, says, "This is such a worthwhile program that we feel it is our obligation to lend our support. We feel grateful to be a part of this important community effort."
