The dB Drag Racing Association recently announced the introduction of “Deathmatch ‘99,” a competition they're deeming "the most radical auto sound competition format ever devised." According to Wayne Harris, president and founder of the dBDRA, Deathmatch ’99 will debut at the 1999 dB Drag Racing World Finals in Louisville, KY, on October 16-17, 1999. “In a normal dB Drag Racing round,” explains Harris, “competitors have 30 seconds to achieve their highest SPL. Since the meter records the competitor’s highest score during this 30-second time frame, a simple ‘burp’ of the system for 1–2 seconds is all that's required to put up a big number.” According to Harris, Deathmatch is much, much more demanding. “In a Deathmatch round, competitors compete for a full 5 minutes. To make matters worse, each competitor’s score is averaged across the entire 5-minute duration. This necessitates the need for the competitor to play his/her system as loud as possible for the entire 5-minute judging period.”
Deathmatch ’99 will serve as the Grand Finale to this year’s dB Drag Racing World Finals. Only the top six loudest competitors at the show will be eligible to participate. To make the event even more exciting, all six competitors will compete simultaneously! The competitor who has the highest average SPL at the end of the 5-minute judging period will walk away the victor! “This event is going to push system reliability right to the verge of destruction!” exclaims Harris. “Every aspect of the competition vehicle will be stressed to the max! Electrical system stamina, amplifier thermal characteristics, and speaker reliability will all play important roles in determining who the champion will be.”
As you might imagine, there’s a good chance that one or more participants will experience some form of catastrophic system failure. But, with large risks come large rewards. The Grand Prize for Deathmatch ’99 is a brand new, custom-built motorcycle valued at over $23,000.00, courtesy of Kenwood USA. “Kenwood has been a staunch supporter of dB Drag Racing for the past several years.” offers Harris. “We appreciate their commitment to the sport, and I’m sure the winner of this year’s Deathmatch event will appreciate it as well.”
