Steve Sorrentino has been nothing if not candid about his goals as the 2001 dB Drag season comes to a climax at NOPI Nationals at Atlanta Motor Speedway September 15th."I want to break the world record," Sorrentino says matter-of-factly.
The Johnston, Rhode Island-based MTX Thunderforce competitor took another step toward that goal this weekend in Salem, New Hampshire, sending the crowd into a frenzy with what would have been a record shattering score had the event been triple point.
Sorrentino’s blistering 174.2, achieved using 24 MTX Thunder8100D adaptive class D amplifiers to drive his six MTX RFL152 competition subwoofers, would have broken the existing world record in the Extreme 5-8 class by 1.5 dB.
"You can pretty much throw the points out with a score like that," states an overjoyed Sorrentino. "I spent all day Friday and Saturday installing the new Thunder81000D amps and they really delivered. This gives us a ton of momentum going into NOPI Nationals next weekend."
As the meter read Sorrentino’s final score, veteran 13+ competitor Arthur "Shaker" Turgeon, a long time rival of Sorrentino on-hand to judge the competition, leapt from his seat at the judge’s table and embraced Sorrentino in a tremendous show of sportsmanship.
"Despite the fact that we compete for different manufacturers, it was a classy gesture from ‘Shaker.’ We know how hard the other works and appreciate and respect each other for all of the effort that goes into building these vehicles into competition form."
Sorrentino will compete next in NOPI Nationals at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia next weekend, September 15th.
