Powerlock-Canada Auto Theft Deterrent System Meets Canadian Anti-Theft Standard
The Vehicle Information Centre of Canada (VICC) has given its seal of approval to the Powerlock-Canada anti-theft system. The product, manufactured by California-based Ultimate Security Systems Corp., meets the requirements of VICC’s auto theft deterrent standard, the agency has announced.

VICC developed the auto theft deterrent standard in 1998 with the support of insurance companies, automobile manufacturers, consumers, police, security system manufacturers and Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada. The standard is the first of its kind in North America.

"Until we developed this standard," says Henning Norup, president and COO of VICC, "consumers had no way of knowing the effectiveness of the hundreds of anti-theft devices on the market. Now they know that systems like Powerlock-Canada meet the standards set by the insurance industry."

Powerlock-Canada is one of only three aftermarket immobilizer systems approved by the VICC. The agency’s stringent standard requires immobilizer systems to be: 1) passively armed; 2) once armed, cut a vital circuit to fuel, ignition or starter motor; 3) require a special key or code to disarm.

Additionally, aftermarket products such as Powerlock-Canada must undergo extensive laboratory testing by Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada to ensure compliance with the Canadian Theft Deterrent Standard. Tests encompass voltage, electromagnetic compatibility, temperature, humidity, accelerated aging, sealing against dust and water, as well as vibration, bump, and attack testing.

"We’re delighted that VICC’s testing confirms that our Powerlock-Canada vehicle anti-theft system meets the high standards set by the Canadian insurance industry," says James Cooper, CEO of Ultimate Security Systems Corporation. "We look forward to distributing the product across Canada in the coming months." Powerlock-Canada is unique because it cannot be hot-wired due to its permanent location on the starter solenoid.

A companion standard to the auto-theft deterrent standard ensures the correct installation of aftermarket theft deterrent systems. Several installation facilities across Canada are registered by the VICC as meeting the requirements of the standard.
