USA Digital Radio Inc., a privately-held digital radio technology company owned by the nation's largest radio broadcasters and other prominent media, technology, and investment companies, and Electronics Research, Incorporated (ERI), a manufacturer of transmitter equipment, antennas and towers for radio and television broadcasting, have announced a joint technology and marketing agreement that will integrate ERI into USA Digital Radio's growing coalition of companies working to develop and commercialize digital AM and FM radio.Under the terms of the agreement, USA Digital Radio and ERI will develop, test, and promote FM combiners and filters that are compatible with USA Digital Radio's in-band, on-channel digital audio broadcast technology, iDAB. The iDAB system uses the current radio spectrum to transmit existing AM and FM analog simultaneously with new high-quality digital signals. iDAB-compatible combiners will provide broadcasters with a cost-effective option to convert to digital by combining the signal of a lower-power digital transmitter with the analog signal of their existing transmitter. iDAB is designed to give consumers superior sound quality and crystal clear reception while listening to their favorite AM and FM stations, and to display new data services on a radio screen, such as song and artist identification, local traffic, weather, news, and more.
"We are very pleased to have formed an alliance with ERI," states Robert J. Struble, president and CEO, USA Digital Radio, Inc. "ERI's strong engineering resources and nearly 60 years of experience in the industry makes them a welcome addition to our coalition. USA Digital Radio is now working with 15 transmission equipment manufacturers to produce iDAB-compatible equipment for each step in the radio transmission path."
"Entering into this partnership with USA Digital Radio will help us ensure that our products are ready for radio's transition to the digital world," offers Tom Silliman, president and CEO, Electronics Research, Incorporated. "USA Digital Radio's broadcast ownership and technology expertise will enable it to lead the transition, and we're very excited to be part of their coalition."
