Infinity Ships Completely Redesigned Kappa Line of Loudspeakers
Infinity announced it is shipping the new line of Kappa speakers and multi-elements that features Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm (C.M.M.D.) woofer cones with Plus One. The C.M.M.D. material is a major breakthrough in transducer-diaphragm technology, resulting in a lightweight but durable cone that has high performance and minimal distortion. In addition to the C.M.M.D. material, the new Kappas utilize Infinity ís proprietary Plus One technology, which enables the Brand to use a cone that is up to 30 percent larger than those found in competing speakers to deliver more bass output and increase the wooferís efficiency. The new Kappa line also has an oversized voice coil, which is 25 percent larger than those in previous models, and additionally feature outboard crossovers and C.M.M.D. tweeters. The Kappa line includes standard integrated speakers, custom-fit integrated speakers, component systems and separate components.

Infinityís C.M.M.D. material creates a cone with an aluminum outer portion and a ceramic center. Possessing the best properties of each material, the cones are lightweight and durable for outstanding performance. Because C.M.M.D. offers pistonic operation over the entire usable range for woofers and midrange speakers, colorations due to cone breakup modes are completely eliminated, dramatically reducing distortion. The ceramic center also helps to move resonances to a higher frequency, beyond operating range. For tweeters, the technology offers superior stiffness and damping compared to that of traditional metal cones, moving the first significant breakup mode to the 30kHz region. First used in Infinity Home Audio top-ranked Prelude MTS, C.M.M.D. technology is ideal for car audio applications because the diaphragm will not deteriorate when exposed to moisture, sunlight or extreme temperatures.

The C.M.M.D. cones are also Plus One in design. Introduced in last year’s Reference Series speakers, the patent-pending Plus One technology allows Infinity to use larger than usual cones to deliver an audible increase in efficiency and bass output. With Plus One, the Brand has increased the coneís overall diameter and created a standard-sized speaker with a cone that is up to 30 percent larger than usual. For example, a 4-inch speaker with Plus One has a true 4-inch cone, whereas, on a traditional speaker, the cone would be closer to three inches. Infinity’s engineers’ unique basket design makes a larger cone possible. With the larger woofer cones and longer voice coils, Infinityís new Kappa speakers produce superior bass performance. The Kappa line also now features durable cast polymer baskets that provide a solid house for the motor structure, while the high-wall rubber surrounds enhance the driver’s performance capabilities.

"Infinity’s new Kappa line offers best-in-class performance, and the key is the C.M.M.D. woofer cones with Plus One," says Christopher M. Dragon, director of Brand Marketing, Infinity Mobile Systems. "Because of this technology, the new Kappa line, which is built upon the successful framework of previous models, offers a flawless listening experience and provides higher quality sound, more power, more bass, and more features to benefit consumers."

All Kappa multi-elements incorporate an outboard voice-matched and computer-optimized crossover, ensuring a seamless transition between the woofer and tweeter. In addition, the line’s component systems feature a high-quality 2nd-order acoustic passive crossover that includes Custom Contour. This allows the user or installer to select between the two different system responses to match varying system designs or listener preferences.

The Kappa speakers also now boast true edge-driven dome tweeters, which deliver extended frequency response and power handling. The new tweeters also have better dispersion than in previous models, and a 1-inch voice coil that can better sink heat from the motor. Select Kappa tweeters are UniPivot (patent no.6,002,780) in design, which allows the tweeter to rotate 359 degrees. UniPivot enables the listener to direct the tweeter right at the sweet spot, and its ratcheting system ensures that the tweeter stays put, regardless of how many bumps lie in the road ahead.

The Kappa three-way speakers (63.3i, 693.3i ) feature EMIT tweeters. A classic Infinity design, the EMIT tweeters have a planer driver with a flat magnet and flat voice coil. The voice coil is set in Mylar, and the result of the combined technology is an extremely light diaphragm that provides outstanding transient response.

The 6-1/2-inch Kappas (62.3i, 63.3i) come with the Intermount III mounting system. The mounting system has three rings (one each for import, domestic and Chrysler vehicles), which allow the speaker to drop into factory locations for quick installation.

In addition to facilitating easy installation for the 6-1/2-inch speakers, Infinity also offers its I-Mount (patent no.5,859,917) mounting system for the tweeters on Kappa component systems. The system enables the tweeter to be easily flush-, angle- or surface-mounted. After the tweeter is mounted, I-Mount makes sure it stays set, which is an important advantage over competing "eyeball" tweeter-mounting systems, which rely on friction to hold the tweeter in place.

Another feature of the new Kappa line is that the speakers’ tinsel leads are attached to the spider. Unlike speakers whose tinsel leads simply hang, the Kappa leads lie flat and secure, which prevents problems that may occur in a traditional configuration. When unprotected tinsel leads are longer, they are susceptible to damage that can occur when the leads hit the cone, which can alter the sound of the speaker, or when they hit each other and short out; conversely, leads that are too short can become disconnected when the cone moves. With the new configuration, Infinity remedies all of these potential problems.
