Blaupunkt Gets SMART at Spring Break Nationals
Blaupunkt will show off a pair of tiny, two-seat MCC SMART cars with big–car Blaupunkt sound at the Spring Break Nationals being held on March 23-25. Blaupunkt has installed monster sound systems in these unusual cars, which are only 8.2 feet long, 5 feet wide and 5 feet tall, and weigh just 1600 pounds. MCC SMART cars are popular in Europe, but not approved for sale in the U.S., where Blaupunkt is using them to demonstrate its high performance sound systems.

The idea behind the audio systems for both of the cars was to put in as much clean loud sound without altering the structure of the car. The system designers, Blaupunkt's Dallas Wilson and Keith Kames wanted to achieve high SPLs (sound pressure level) and a lot of bass, but they also wanted the overall tonal character it to be as accurate as possible. In tests at the Blaupunkt development facility in Broadview, IL, one of the cars was able to achieve a 150 dB SPL with excellent frequency response.

Both cars' dashboards were redesigned to provide as much in-your-face highs as possible and to generate the maximum stereo separation as possible such a small car. Blaupunkt's top-of-the-line OverDrive speakers are used throughout. The door panels were rebuilt to incorporate two 6-1/2-inch woofers. The subwoofer enclosures were designed to give as much bass as possible without giving up any room in the passenger compartment, being there is not much room to give up. One of the cars has four, 15-inch woofers and the other has six 12-inch woofers in the area behind the seat.

The MCC SMART car has a three-cylinder, 49-cubic-inch diesel engine with Bosch Common-Rail turbo-Diesel Injection (CDI). Rated at 64 BHP, it can accelerate the car from zero to 100 km/h (62.5 mph) in 19.8 seconds. The car has a top speed of 84 mph and it can deliver over 65 miles per gallon. These are surprisingly safe vehicles, with a steel cage frame, driver and passenger air bags, Bosch ABS brakes, and electronic traction and stability controls. In Germany they cost about $7500 before taxes. MCC is a subsidiary of Daimler Chrysler.
