CEA Chairman Darrell Issa Wins Republican Nomination For U.S. Congress
Breaking through a crowded field of ten candidates, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Chairman Darrell Issa yesterday won the Republican nomination for U.S. Congress to represent the 48th congressional district in California. Issa, founder and former president of Directed Electronics Inc., a major mobile electronics manufacturer, captured a full 45 percent of the votes compared to 30 percent for his closest opponent. In this traditionally Republican district, he now becomes the heavy favorite to win in November's general election.

"Darrell's win is terrific news for our association," said CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro. "It is rare for a trade association to have a siting chairman as a major congressional candidate. Should Darrell go on to win the general election, entrepreneurs and the technology industry will have a knowledgeable advocate on Capitol Hill. Indeed, all those interested in securing rational public policy that enables continued innovations in consumer technology will find a true champion in Darrell Issa."

Issa has served as chairman of CEA since last November. Previously, he served as chairman, and before that vice chairman, of CEA's predecessor, the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association (CEMA). In 1992, as president of the Mobile Electronics Association, Issa guided its transition into CEMA's Mobile Electronics Division. In 1996, Issa campaigned in California to become the Republican party's candidate for the United States Senate; finishing second in a field of five while garnering more than one million votes.
