ATX Technologies Inc., reports that construction has begun on its state-of-the-art telematics Response Center. The Center will be dedicated solely to the company's telematics operation, which provides sophisticated, location-s0pecific mobile emergency response and information services to motorists and wireless device users. The facility will help meet the rapidly growing demand for current ATX telematics services and set the stage for the company's future offerings by accommodating the integration of location-based Internet information and p-commerce — commerce based on a person's mobile location."Our strategy as pioneers of telematics in 1995 was to provide the most technically sophisticated response operation in the worlds," explains Steve Millstein, president, ATX Technologies, Inc. "With telematics advancing to include not only live operator emergency response but also real-time access to a variety of databases for both vehicles and wireless handsets, we need this facility to house the technology to make that happen tomorrow. This Center will allow us to continue providing our customers with a technologically superior level of service."
The Response Center, to be located in the Dallas suburb of Irving, should be operational by late 1999 with a 150-station data/telematics response facility and corporate offices. The Center, in its initial stage, is configured to serve approximately 300,000 telematics customers, with room for expansion. The project is expected to increase ATX employment by approximately 30 percent over year-end 1998 levels.
Within the next year, the Irving Center will be linked to the ATX Technologies Response Center in San Antonio, providing total redundancy between two fully-staffed 24-hour operation dedicated solely to telematics. At that time, the current ATX backup facility in San Antonio will serve as the third backup facility and an advanced training center for response specialists.
