Whether it was a board or wheels, athletes sporting KICKER colors and decals will pull some of the sickest stunts ever seen on national TV in the coming weeks. Catch x-treme KICKER fever for six Sunday's during October and November as NBC Sports broadcasts the Gravity Games 2001. KICKER-sponsored competitors had it dialed in for this year's Games, which were held the first week of September. Look for KICKER competitors in the Wakeboarding event, the Street Luge events, the Freestyle Motocross event, and on the medals stand! The Gravity Games will be shown on NBC Sunday afternoons on October 7, October 14, October 21, November 4, November 11, and November 25. Check your local listings.
Keep your eyes open for Darin Shapiro (Orlando, FL) and Parks Bonifay (Lake Alfred, FL), who finished 1-2 in the Wakeboarding event at Roger Williams Park. Shapiro had the Labor-Day crowd of 9,500 stoked with a run good enough to finally overtake Bonifay, reversing their respective finishes from last year.
Fan-favorite Travis Pastrana won the gold medal in the Freestyle Motocross event, edging fellow KICKER rider Tommy "Tomcat" Clowers on the final day of the Games. Also look for X Games gold medalist "Cowboy" Kenny Bartram, "Mad" Mike Jones, Ronnie Faisst, and Mike Metzger wearing KICKER decals on their machines. Metzger has the memorable ride of the Games when he crams his bike into the side panel pads.
Maniacal Team Dregs' street luger Biker Sherlock (San Diego, CA) took the silver medal in the four-man event in front of 15,000 raving lunatics on College Hill. He didn't fare so well in the 6-man event with a fifth-place finish, but at least he finished. In a Downhill Skateboarding qualifying heat, Sherlock tasted pavement at around 45 mph in one of the classic bails of the week. Look for the KICKER decal on his lid as it bounces across the road surface with his head in it!
The Gravity Games feature more than 250 world-class athletes from 17 different countries, competing in 16 events. Last year's Gravity Games drew nearly 370,000 spectators to Providence in just its second straight year.
