The STARMOD2 is an electronic interface that retains the use of the factory OnStar system when replacing the factory radio in General Motors vehicles.

To date, the retention of the OnStar® system has not been properly carried out by retailers due to a lack of an appropriate interface. Not known to most installation facilities is the fact that the OnStar system has to be able to broadcast to the vehicle occupants even if the vehicle is sitting with the key in the 'off' position. This is necessary in case the car is involved in an accident while sitting, and the airbags deploy. Upon airbag deployment the OnStar Call Center will attempt to contact the occupants to check for possible injuries. If this automatic broadcast function of the Onstar system is not properly retained when replacing the factory radio, it is a severe liability issue for the installing dealer.

The SoundGate STARMOD2 contains an electronic wake-up module, a mono amplifier capable of driving an outboard speaker (cell-phone speaker, two 3 1/2-inch, etc.), a status indicator, and a gain control for volume adjustment. In addition, a built-in high-quality audio relay automatically switches OnStar messaging to one of the vehicles factory speakers. The STARMOD2 includes all of this technology in a compact 3 1/2-inch x 2 1/2-inch x 1-inch plastic enclosure. Complete DC isolation is accomplished via the use of a high-performance audio transformer stage.

Installation of the STARMOD2 is very simple via a two-wire connection to the OnStar audio wires, connection of power, ground, and to an external speaker (not included). An additional mute output is included so that the new receiver can be automatically muted during an incoming OnStar communication.
